Updated September 30, 2026. This guide summarizes the website and lessons; it is not a transcript of the videos.

The course teaches practical LightBurn workflows for compatible fiber lasers. You need LightBurn installed and your machine already connected and configured following the manufacturer's instructions. Initial machine setup is not included. Your laser, software, and materials are separate costs. This is not an xTool software course or universal training for every laser type.

The course is a self-guided archive without individual technical support or promised future updates. Older recordings may mention the former paid course or discussion group; those references no longer apply. Settings vary with the machine, lens, material, and software version, so testing is needed. Free access does not make the course or artwork public domain; the site's terms apply. Some software and materials links are affiliate links.

## Curriculum

Start with the introduction, then Modules 1–4. Module 5 has nine individual project lessons.

### Welcome: Course introduction

Get oriented before you begin: what Fiber Laser Ignite covers, how the LightBurn Primer connects to the projects, and how to work through the lessons. The course focuses on building practical confidence with your fiber laser in LightBurn, with basic laser concepts introduced along the way.

You’ll also review the starting requirements: a compatible fiber laser, LightBurn installed, and your machine already connected and configured using your manufacturer’s instructions. Initial machine setup is not part of the course.

### Module 2: Basic Fiber Laser Settings

Understand the five core settings you’ll encounter when working with a fiber laser: power, speed, frequency, Q-pulse width, and line interval. Justin explains what each setting controls and how changes affect the way the laser delivers energy to your material.

The lesson also introduces the differences between MOPA and non-MOPA adjustment ranges and the relationship between line spacing and engraving density. Use this background to understand the settings you’ll test and refine in the project lessons.

### Module 3: Basic Fiber Laser Processes

Explore the differences between engraving, etching, and annealing through explanations and demonstrations. See how removing material, changing its surface, and creating an oxidation mark produce different results.

Justin compares the settings and passes used for each process and discusses the kinds of finishes you can achieve. This gives you a starting point for choosing an approach when you move into the hands-on projects.

### Module 4: LightBurn Primer

Build a working foundation in LightBurn before tackling the projects. Walk through the interface, settings, text and shape tools, selection methods, importing artwork, and organizing designs with layers and sublayers.

Then explore Boolean operations, engraving modes, preview and framing, image tracing, and the material library. These are the tools you’ll return to throughout the course to prepare designs, position artwork, check a job, and save useful settings.

### Module 5 - Project 01: Basic text on aluminum

Start with a simple text engraving on bare aluminum and learn the complete path from a design in LightBurn to a finished mark. Justin explains how to find a starting point for your settings and why your laser’s wattage, lens, and material matter when using settings from another source.

Follow the practical workflow of focusing, previewing, framing, engraving, and inspecting the result. Finish by saving the settings to the material library so you can reuse them on future jobs.

### Module 5 - Project 02: Slate coaster

Create a custom engraved slate coaster while learning how to measure a blank and build a matching template on a LightBurn tool layer. Import and size the supplied artwork, center it, and use an offset to prepare an inverted design for a light mark on dark slate.

Run material tests, compare the results, and refine speed, power, and frequency instead of relying on a single preset. Once the settings are selected, frame the coaster, engrave the design, and save the finished setup.

### Module 5 - Project 03: Embossed & debossed brass coin

Engrave a brass coin with both embossed and debossed designs. Measure the coin and its rim, create concentric templates, and prepare the artwork so the laser removes either the design itself or the surrounding background.

Use sublayers to alternate repeated engraving passes with cleaning passes, and adjust the scan angle between passes. The lesson finishes with hand-cleaning and polishing the coin to bring out the detail and contrast.

### Module 5 - Project 04: Anodized aluminum tiger card

Turn the supplied tiger artwork into a personalized, full-bleed design on an anodized aluminum card. Build a template for the card, use a Boolean intersection to crop the pattern, and add curved text to the design.

Create an offset around the lettering and subtract it from the pattern to give the text room to stand out. Then check the inverted design in preview, frame it on the card, and engrave the finished artwork.

### Module 5 - Project 05: Annealed stainless steel knife

Apply a logo to a stainless steel knife blade using an annealing workflow. Start with a test on a utility blade, then compare how focus height and crosshatching affect the consistency and appearance of the mark.

Use those results to prepare the knife: support and level the blade, set focus and the chosen offset, orient the artwork, and fine-tune its size and position with framing. Save the settings with the focus offset noted for future reference.

### Module 5 - Project 06: Brass lighter

Prepare a two-sided design for a brass lighter using a photo of the object as a layout reference. Trace the supplied raster artwork, separate and crop the designs, add personalized lettering, and prepare the reverse side with the correct orientation.

Adapt the earlier brass coin settings to the lighter, then experiment with cleaning and an additional darkening pass to build contrast. The lesson also covers framing the actual object, removing the lighter insert before engraving, and cleaning and polishing the finished shell.

### Module 5 - Project 07: Etched pocket knife

Create a custom engraving that fits the irregular shape of a pocket knife blade. Use a reference photo to trace the blade with nodes and curves, refine and close the outline, and create an inset boundary to keep the artwork away from the edge.

Crop a pattern to the template with Boolean tools and add personalized text. Compare approaches for bare and coated blades, frame the design on the knife, and finish by cleaning the engraving and saving the material settings.

### Module 5 - Project 08: Photo engraving

Engrave a detailed image on an anodized aluminum card while learning why photo engraving uses a raster image rather than a traced vector. Justin explains grayscale and dithering, demonstrates the Jarvis image mode, and shows how to mask and crop the image to fit the card.

Build a compact test grid from a small, detailed area of the image so you can compare settings without using a whole blank for every test. Refine speed and frequency, evaluate highlights and shadows, then apply the selected settings to the full image.

### Module 5 - Project 09: 3D-style brass coin

Create a 3D-style relief engraving on a solid brass coin using the supplied lion depth map and LightBurn’s 3D Sliced image mode. Learn how image brightness relates to engraving depth, how the pass count affects the process, and why a prepared depth map produces a different result from an ordinary grayscale image.

Size the artwork to fit inside the coin’s rim, adapt settings from the earlier brass project, and configure cleanup passes during engraving. Finish by cleaning the coin, applying a brass-darkening solution, and polishing the raised surfaces to emphasize the relief.

## Frequently asked questions

### I bought the course when it was paid. Can I still log in?

Yes! I’m keeping the original Kajabi student area available for a little while longer, so you can keep working through the course there. [Log in to your student library](https://learn.justinlaser.com/library) using the account you used to purchase the course.

### Is the whole course really free?

Yes. You can watch the course here without purchasing it or creating an account. Your laser, software, and project materials are separate costs.

### Is this suitable for a beginner?

Yes. Once your compatible laser is connected and configured in LightBurn, the course starts with basic context, introduces the software, and moves into progressively more involved projects.

### Can I use a different brand or wattage?

The focus is the LightBurn workflow, rather than one particular laser brand. Your machine needs to support LightBurn, and settings will vary with your laser, lens, and material. The projects show how to test and adjust.

### Does this work with xTool lasers?

This course isn’t designed for xTool lasers. We’ll be working in LightBurn throughout, rather than xTool’s own software, so the step-by-step instructions won’t match your setup. You’re still welcome to watch for project ideas and general engraving tips!

### Can I watch each project separately?

Yes. All nine projects have their own lesson in Module 5, so you can work through them in order or jump straight to the one you need.
